The Origin of the name
“
JOHNNY BROWNS SUITE”
MIZNER AND HIS MONKEYS
Addison Mizner, of the world renowned Boca Raton Resort
and Club, fabled to walk the hotel property in silk pajamas,
a monkey on one shoulder, a parrot on the other and two chow
dogs in tow, Addison Mizner was renowned for his affection
of creatures both great and small.
History records Mizner's love of exotic animals back to
the age of 17 and his first
primate, Duty. While traveling through Latin America with
his father Lansing Bond Mizner, the Envoy Extraordinary and
Minister Plenipotentiary to Central America, a young Mizner
was presented the spider monkey in Nicaragua. A playful Monkey,
Duty, along with his young conspirator Addison, often wreaked
havoc throughout the journey. In fact, during a visit to
Costa Rica, a diplomatic reception turned into a near riot
when Duty leaped onto the head of a general. In the melee
that ensued, the poor monkey fell into the harbor and drowned.
However tragic, Duty's devilish personality struck a special
bond with the jovial
Mizner and affirmed his fondness for spider monkeys for years
to come. In fact,
Mizner's most famous pet and sidekick was a spider monkey
named Johnnie Brown. Often called "the human monkey," Johnnie
accompanied Mizner practically everywhere he went. Throughout
the 1920s, it was common to see the two parading around the
hotel or along Worth Avenue. So widespread was Johnnie's
fame that a special invitation was extended to him and Mizner
to attend the Scope's Monkey Trial.
To this day a special memorial marks the grave of Johnnie
Brown along the vine
covered Via Mizner in Palm Beach. A single line epitaph says
it all, "He was hardly ever without that monkey."
